In Ayi Kwei Armah‘s 1968 novel, The Beautyful Ones Are Not Yet Born – a book of deep disillutionment triggered by the corruption and general rot in Ghana at the time, a voice mused:
“How long will Africa be cursed with it’s leaders?”
Decades later, this abysmal state and atrocious leaders are still existent in Ghana; a situation that has clearly inspired Poetra Asantewa’s latest offering, “Vote For Me” – which features Akan.
In the song Poetra does some questioning to – and about – the electorate and the politicians who “campaign in good poetry and rule in bad prose.”
Akan’s verse, on the other hand, sounds like a mimicry of a typical campaign speech by these politicians – dishonest words spoken with marvelous eloquence.
Listen, reflect and decide if you’re buying their message or not.
