After stops in Lomé, Paris, Dakar, Ouagadougou, Cotonou, and Kpalimé, the Arctivism train rails its way to Ghana’s capital, Accra, for it’s 29th edition.
Launched in October 2009, Arctivism – which is a fusion of the words: Art and Activism, is basically art-driven socio-political activism. The initiative aims first and foremost, to instill pan-African consciousness in the psyche of African youth. Each edition of Arctivism focuses on a Pan-Africanist figure, and offers a rich program: oratory art (rap, slam, etc.), painting, dance and documentaries.

The 29th Arctivism will be dedicated to Marcus Garvey, Jamaican born activist, for his key role in raising an awareness for the necessity of diasporic Africans to repartriate to the continent. What better place than Accra then, to celebrate the person who inspired the Ghana’s Black Star iconography, some few days before what would have been his 130th birthday?
On Saturday 12th August 2017, at 6pm inside the premises of Abajo Culture + Art Cafe, the audience will have the opportunity to enjoy a variety of live activities from graffiti to musical performances; and learn more about the iconic founder of the Black Star Line (a shipping and passenger line that facilitated the return of African in the diaspora, to the Motherland), through the documentary “Look for me in the whirlwind – The Marcus Garvey Story”. A debate – dubbed “Marcus Garvey’s Legacy: from vision to implementation”- which will be moderated by internationally acclaimed scholar, Amzat Boukari-Yabara, shall follow.

The Arctivism concert will no doubt be an exciting climax of the evening. The event will feature a range of versatile Ghanaian and Togolese artists: Wanlov, Balles 2 Rimes, Elom20ce and Poetra Asantewa will treat us to some rap and spoken word, Kezita, her smooth reggae vibes, and we’re promised to be transported into another realm by the African Hard Metal, Arka’n’s energy; all accompanied by Dj Vim Tinz’ genius on the decks.
Get ready for a night of enjoyment and consciousness! More details on the event page on Facebook.
