Delasi: Afemakpor

Before recently being introduced to Delasi’s music, I stumbled across a mini documentary he had made called ‘Unheard Voices’, a project which he describes as ‘enabling young people in the communities of James Town and Laterbiokorshie, to air their voices through music.’ If you haven’t seen this already, I highly recommend that you do – very inspiring.
Now to the music – ‘Afemakpor’ (Ewe) pronounced: ‘Ah-whey-makpor’ translates to ‘not finding home.’ In the video, Delasi is seen to reflect on his relationship with his family and the loss of a loved one—his dad. He is seen in intentionally over exposed sequences on a journey, a ‘Thought Journey’ as described by the artist, linking to the title of his debut album.
On this song, Delasi fuses 808 hip hop beats with a traditional Ewe borborbor music sample on the Mike Millz produced and Dex Kwasi mixed tribute – welcomed and unique style in this industry.
Not my favourite video I have reviewed so far, but I believe he has so much more room to grow. His talent is undeniable, and I look forward to watching his growth over the coming years – Delasi is here to stay folks!
