I am embarrassed to say I didn’t know who GhaliLeo was until I was asked to review this video (which has been a long time coming), now I’m proud to say he’s slowly creeping up my top 10 GH Rappers list.
Remember when rapper Common was still called Common Sense and featured regularly on Def Jam poetry? That’s what this song reminds me of; and the video – directed and edited by GhaliLeo, does the song justice.
The opening scene sees a low/medium shot of the bare footed artist walking into frame, onto an uncompleted building site. The camera pans till he is almost out of frame, displaying the cleverly timed, first few lyrics of the song.
GhaliLeo is then seen pouring libation in the second shot; for those who don’t know – A libation is a ritual pouring of a liquid as an offering to a god or spirit or in memory of those who have died. Further highlighting the line where he says; ‘now when we meet, this love is no longer deep’.
The entire video is edited with a slow motion and black and white effect (only the last scene is in colour), giving it a dream-like sequence feel. My favourite scene in the video, plays from 1:16 secs to 1:46secs – we see GhaliLeo walking away from one of Ghana’s picturesque coastlines in true Baywatch style but he keeps his shirt on for this one.
Nice work on this one, definitely worth a watch and then a subscribe! Truly a moving piece, both lyrically and visually.
Side note: Perhaps a note to indie artists out there; this video also shows one of the creative ways an artist can create interesting visual content, without the need to invest huge amounts of money that might not be readily available on costly productions.
