On sunday 6th April 2014, Madina based rapper Lyricalwanzam contacted yoyo tinz. The Cryme records artist found out Hiplife duo Keche had released a song “For Sheygey Reasons” practically the same song name and hook as Wanzam’s 2012 recording.
“For Sheygey reasons” was released in 2013 by Lyricalwanzam, featuring M.anifest. A video was shot and is available online here. It has been viewed more than 85 000 times so far. The two artists also performed the song live many times. We vividly remember the magic they brought to KFC in August 2013 it Osu.
So for the well known hiplife duo Keche to came up with a song similar to lyricalwanzam’s is confusing and problematic. We did listen to the two songs and can confirm that they sound similar, enough to wonder if it amounts to plagiarism ? but we cannot deny that there is a resemblance in the structure and lyrics.
Considering that “For Sheygey Reasons” by Lyricalwanzam and M.anifest was released more than one year ago, that they performed this same song several times in Ghana and that the video reached almost 90 000 views, the probability that Keche never heard about the song before is close to zero. There has been several tweets at the duo concerning the situation , but until now, no one has responded, or come with an explanation.
Yoyo tinz aims at promoting Ghanaian hip-hop in all its diversity, thus this situation is raising our concern. More over Lyricalwanzam and M.anifest are artists we follow and admire, this incident of plagiarism is regrettable. This proves the importance of having a platform such as yoyo tinz that tries to present the work of Ghanaian hip hop artists who terribly lack of visibility.
