Edem: Girlfriend ft. Raquel
Dir: Nana Kofi Asihene of NKACC
Nothing hooks you to a music video more than Raquel in a bra and tight blue skirt running into frame, all in slow motion – and that is how this video opens. This is immediately followed by sharp pans around the couple’s (Edem and Racquel) apartment. Although I’m not a big fan of the song, I’m instantly hooked to the video.
Almost the entire music video, is a one shot, excluding a phone conversation and a flashback, using a medium shot and only 3 obvious cuts. A single camera cleverly follows the arguing couple as Raquel angrily packs her belongings from room to room in the very plush apartment.
Judging from the lyrics of the song, Edem cheated on Akua (Raquel) the night before with his paddies; Amina and Lucia – chale it’s always the so called ‘paddies’. The house is messy with the leftovers of the night before including an oblivious and almost naked girl who suddenly appears in frame while Edem is desperately trying to get his girl back in a mixture of English and Ewe.
The video ends with flashbacks of the night spent with Amina and Lucia, as Edem tries in vain to stop Raquel from leaving. Unconvinced, she steps into an elevator – a scene reminiscent of the infamous last scene in Fifty Shades of Grey.
NKACC are known to make creative and engaging content, so my level of expectations were very high, and as usual they pulled it off with this one, adding to Edem’s impressive portforlio of great music videos like The One, Heyba and Delaila, to list a few.
I was very impressed by this video, and Edem continues to display staying power by proving his versatility and growth over and over again.
